Shag's Pirate Boy toys now available for purchase! click here to consume

Disneyland and Span of Sunset, Inc. Present: - Shag's Pirate Boy. - Sepia and Regular colorway.

Shag, whose real name is Josh Agle (he took the last two letters of his first name and the first two letters of his last name to create his artist moniker), is a Southern California-based artist whose work reflects his love for tikis, primitive art, and vintage movie and television themes. His vivid and colorful paintings often display characters who lavishly partake in consumerism and are often in the middle of a situation that the viewer can interpret as well as enjoy visually.

With his sophisticated and upbeat style, Disney naturally took keen interest in a collaboration with Shag. His presence in the Disney resort world began with creating merchandise for the Enchanted Tiki Room's 40th anniversary in 2003 and also led to his participation in commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Disneyland park in 2005. For the 50th anniversary, Shag created pieces of art that depicted each of Disneyland's five lands, as well as a comprehensive “Shag-style"map of the park and other celebratory collectibles that are lauded and cherished by Disney and, of course, its legions of fans.

STASH x SLICK : “Rust in Piece”
Melt Gallery (A Span of Sunset, Inc. Production)
November 9-December 16
7522 Sunset Blvd, LA 90046
www.meltcomics.com

The newly inaugurated Melt Gallery is proud to present the fine art of two of the country’s most renowned street artists, Stash and Slick. Representing the East and West coasts respectively, the two artists have been honing their distinct styles for more than 20 years and have both become internationally recognized icons in a scene they helped lay the foundation for. Melt is proud to unite both artists-who will be exhibiting together for the first time-bridging the gaps between their definitive coastal styles, influences, and experiences. Each will individually present a body of new work created specifically for the show, and collaborative paintings will represent the first artistic cooperation of the pair. In addition, limited-edition merchandise from both artists will be available throughout the duration of the show.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

STASH:
This Brooklyn native started writing graffiti in the streets of New York City in the early ‘80s and exhibited his first works on canvas at the seminal Fun Gallery in 1983. His next brush with fame came when his work was published in the renowned graffiti book Spray Can Art, a 1985 tome that remains an authoritative document of the era. He painted his last subway train with Zephyr in 1987 before moving on to focus on a career in commercial graphics and fine arts. In that time, Stash has proved to be a leader in the commercial street art scene working with countless companies including A Bathing Ape, Hysteric Glamour, Medicom Toys, and Mo Wax Arts. An entrepreneur at heart, Stash also pioneered his own labels, Subware and Recon, which now have flagship stores in Tokyo, New York, and San Francisco. Stash has also proved to be a crucial innovator in the exploding sneakerhead scene opening his own boutique Nort and partnering with manufacturers such as Nike and Gravis to create a wave of signature shoes that have become icons of the industry. He enjoys a brisk fine art career and has had major exhibitions throughout the US, Europe and Asia.

SLICK:
Born and raised in Hawaii, Slick moved to LA to pursue a career in commercial art and quickly became a dominant figure in the local graffiti scene. After attending Otis Parsons, then finishing out his formal training at Art Center College of Design, Slick started writing with the notorious Kill To Succeed crew before moving on to found a series of some of the most influential streetwear brands in the industry. Third Rail, Fuct, Shaolin Worldwide, and most recently, Dissizit are all products of an artist with a sharp tongue and even sharper eye that spawned waves of countless imitators. When Slick isn’t busy creating graphics for some of Hollywood’s most influential companies, he focuses on a growing fine art career that has brought the imagery he honed in the streets to the white walls of galleries around the world.
